Meeting Tonight

Join us tonight in Kimmel 908 at 8pm for our first Free Culture meeting! As mentioned before, pizza will be served. We’re going to start off with a short introduction to Free Culture, discuss how to stay updated with FC even if you can’t attend all the meetings, talk about our plans for this term, and wrap up with some current events.

For those interested, there’s a Free Culture conference this upcoming Columbus Day weekend. It’s going to be held October 11-12, at UC Berkeley. For more details check out http://conference.freeculture.org.

Free Culture @ NYU protests DRM at the Apple Store Midtown

Thanks to everyone who came out to our DRM protest at the Apple store today!

Defective by Design provided the catchy yellow Hazmat suits and we handed out hundreds of flyers, made lots of friends and spread the word against DRM.

Club Fair Sucess!

We’d like to thank everyone who stopped by our table to check us out and write down their e-mail on Thursday! The club fair was a huge sucess for us, and we ended up giving away mostly everything we had on the table. Here’s a photo of myself and Olga manning it early on:

We’ll be sure to get more schwag for next semester!

In the mean time, come to our next meeting! It will be on Tuesday the 12th at 8pm, as we decided that Wednesday wasn’t that convenient for people. Meet at the usual spot, The Kimmel Student Center on the 7th Floor.

Village Voice writes about Free Culture @ NYU

In case you didn’t hear, Carla Blumenkranz from the Village Voice interviewed Inga and I last month about our club. Check out her excellent article here, and make sure to pick up a copy of the Voice this week. The only correction is that my name isn’t really “Brian” (as the caption of Brian Kennedy’s photo implies); its “Fred” Just so you know.

Thanks to everyone who came out for our second DRM demonstration! Richard Stallman and his friends from NYFairUse joined us. RMS donned the sacred-sandwich board, we witnessed a domestic disturbance, handed out over 700 flyers, met many interested and shocked consumers and only got a little cold. As Tom mentioned in his earlier post, a manager from Tower Records came and chatted with us. He quickly denied that Tower was stocking any of the XCP-infected CDs, but Tom pulled out a Van Zant CD he had just purchased at the store! Check out pictures here and here. The manager was a really good sport about it — he told us that he’d have them pulled from the shelves “immediately.” We’ll be checking back tomorrow to see how that went. He also suggested that we go and protest at the Sony store in midtown, and we thought this was a great idea, so keep an eye out for another DRM demonstration up on 55th and Madison.

Pics from DRM Protest

Well the DRM protest was a smashing success. We had plenty of people, from Free Culture @ NYU and other groups show up and hand out over a thousand flyers. We also met plenty of consumers who were shocked, dismayed, and saddened by the news that the CDs that they had just bought probably won’t work on their computer or iPod. We even gave some help to people who complained about CDs not working on their computers. We also got into Virgin and deposited some flyers around the store. It was a great event, everyone had a great time despite getting a bit cold at the end. Here’s a picture from my flickr set of the evening:
