To everyone who came out to the meeting last night – thanks! We’re really excited for this upcoming year, and we’re always looking for ideas, links, etc. Just a handful of the things we talked about last night:

Introduction (again) to Free Culture – we’re also working on a Free Culture 101 document, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Sarah Palin’s email account hacked

Tor and being anonymous on the internet

History of Copyright

QuestionCopyright.org asked us for help – if anyone is interested, check out the website!

Upcoming ideas for the term

fcnyu delicious.com tag – delicious.com is a social bookmarking site, and if you see anything vaguely related to Free Culture, either ‘tag’ it with ‘fcnyu‘ (without quotes) or email it to maxwell [at] nyu [dot] edu and he’ll post it.

Lastly, just a reminder to check out Wikis Take Manhattan this Saturday, and attend next week’s Creative Commons salon (Tuesday, 9/30 at The Open Planning Project, 7-10) if you’re interested.

We’re also going to talk about making the laptop more manageable as a machine to use everyday for adults — you’ll be able to learn how to hack your OLPC and install XFCE (a lightweight GUI), Ubuntu, and take advantage of its unique hardware configurations.

This session will also be for those people who are interested in learning more about the OLPC in general, and what they can expect if they’re expecting a special delivery. Come with a jump drive, and of course if you have one — your OLPC.

Here’s the info for those of you who can’t be bothered to read non bolded sentences:

NYU OLPC Jam Session
Saturday, February 23rd, 2008
12pm-5pm
721 Broadway, 4th Floor

As we discussed in our meeting tonight, the recent symposium “Infringement Nation” by John Tehranian brings up a lot of great copyright issues. Among them, and this is certainly much broader than just copyright, is the distance between our societal norms and the relevant laws. He estimates that if he were held liable to the fullest extent for all of his various and harmless infringements, his bill at the end of a year would be in the 10 figure range. (Incidentally, Tim Wu explored the same topic, separation of norms and laws, in an excellent series called American Lawbreaking on Slate last month.)

Tehranian’s piece also goes into some questionable copyright legislation and the march towards Panopticonian technologies (his word!) in the hands of media holders. It’s a good, short read.

Ars Technica has a good article summarizing the piece, but for the real meat, download the PDF of the paper itself.

I might start posting the “minutes” of the meetings here, because a lot of things come up that it’d be nice to have the links to. Anybody care to sound off on that idea?

We’re especially excited to announce that immediately following the screening, we’ll be hosting a question and answer session with the film’s award-winning Danish co-director, Henrik Moltke and Fritz Attaway, the MPAA’s Executive VP and Special Policy Advisor. If you’re at all interested in these issues, or want to meet a director working in free culture, or even just want to meet someone from the MPAA, you should absolutely come! The film is a wonderful introduction to the topics that Free Culture @ NYU deals in and this screening will be a fantastic opportunity to learn more about what we’re working towards.
