Mark Russinovich, who originally discovered the Sony Rootkit, has posted another update on the current state of things. There are two basic points which haven’t been covered yet…the first is that most AV vendors are removing the cloaking in the same unsafe way that the official patch does, which could cause your computer to crash. Mark mentions a safe way to do it. The second is that the ActiveX control that is required to uninstall the DRM software, like the software itself, is very overreaching. Among other things, it has the ability to restart your computer! This is something that can also potentially be exploited…
Sony: No More Rootkit – For Now
Also, The Register just posted an article which indicates that there are actually at least 47 CD’s that have the Sony Rootkit, not just 20 as previous statements and lists have indicated.
